The lines between your floor and wall tiles are known as grout lines. Over time, these lines becomes dirty from grime and perhaps mold and mildew. Cleaning grout lines is a time-consuming chore, especially if you are doing it by hand. However, if you own a Dremel tool, a high-speed rotary instrument, you can reduce the cleaning time. Although Dremel does not currently advertise a specific attachment for grout cleaning, light pressure from a polishing cone or bristle brush is enough to scrub clean most grout stains.
Things You'll Need
- Dremel tool
- Dremel felt polishing cone or nylon bristle brush
- Commercial grout cleaner
- Spray bottle
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Grout sealer
- Artist's small paintbrush
- Eye protection
Install a nonabrasive polishing bit into your Dremel such as a felt polishing cone or nylon bristle brush.
Spray one section of grout with a commercial grout cleaner. You can make your own cleaner by mixing 2 parts hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water in a spray bottle. Allow the cleaner to work on the grout for 10 minutes, or follow the instructions on the commercial grout cleaner package.
Turn on the Dremel tool, and allow it to reach full speed for one minute. If you're using the bristle brush, this allows loose bristles to fall off prior to use.
Put on safety goggles or other eye protection. Press the Dremel attachment lightly over the grout line, and work in back-and-forth motions to clean the grout. As you finish an area, wipe the grout clean with a dry cloth.
Apply a grout sealer with an artist's paintbrush once the grout is clean. This aids in preventing stains.
