How to Use a Freud Diablo Dado

A dado is a strong woodworking joint composed of a slot in one board face into which you insert another component. The resulting T-shaped joint keeps the boards from moving in relation to one another. Traditional dados were cut with a saw and chisel, but the table saw and the dado set have made crafting the joint simpler. The Freud Diablo dado set is composed of a pair of blades and an assortment of chippers that you stack together to form a blade unit of varying widths. The dado stack in a table saw cuts the joinery in a single pass. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the location of the dado. The width of the cut should precisely match the thickness of the wood to be fitted in the slot. Use a tri-square to extend the lines across the face of the board.

    • 2

Turn the board on edge and extend the width markings with the tri-square. Align the square's straightedge with the marks and extend the lines across the edge of the board. These marks help to align the wood with the dado set.

    • 3

Select the blade and chipper combination that matches the required dado cut. Insert shims between the chippers to adjust the width of the dado stack if the blade combinations alone do not match your required width. Be sure that all blade and chipper teeth are facing the same direction when you stack them together.

    • 4

Disconnect the power cord for the table saw and remove the throat plate. Loosen and remove the arbor nut and washer from the arbor using the manufacturer's wrench or another of the proper size. Carefully store any blade that was mounted in the saw.

    • 5

Mount the dado stock on your table saw's arbor. Follow all of the saw manufacturer's safety instructions when installing the blade set and tightening the arbor nut. Use your saw's wide throat plate in place of the regular plate.

    • 6

Set the cut height for the dado stack using the table saw's blade height adjustment.

    • 7

Align the marks on the board to be cut with the dado set, and hold it securely against the miter gauge.

    • 8

Reconnect the power cord and turn on the saw. Make the cut by passing the board over the dado stack. Keep your fingers clear of the trailing edge of the board so they do not come in contact with the blades.
