How to Convert CHM to DOC With Freeware

The CHM format is used for online "Help" documents that are part of many Microsoft programs. These files typically contain some HTML code and often include hyperlinks to websites. The DOC format is associated with Microsoft Word 2003 and earlier. You can convert a CHM file to a DOC file using freeware.

Things You'll Need

  • CHM file

CHM to DOC Conversion with Theta Software

  • Navigate to the Theta Software CHM to DOC converter site (see Resources).

  • Click the blue "Download Trial" button in the center of the screen, then click the "Save" button and select a location on your computer to store the file.

  • Double-click the downloaded file, then follow the instructions from the installation wizard until the install is complete.

  • Launch the program, then click the folder button next to "CHM File," navigate to the location of your CHM file and click the "Open" button.

  • Click the folder next to "Decompile to" and choose a location for your output DOC file.

  • Click the "Direct Method through MS-Word" option in the "Conversion Method" section, then click the "OK" button to complete the conversion.

CHM to DOC with Dawning Soft

  • Navigate to the Dawning Soft downloads converter site (see Resources).

  • Click the "Download" button next to CHM2Word, then click the "Save" button and select a location on your computer for the downloaded file. Double-click the downloaded file, then follow the prompts from the installation wizard until the install is complete.

  • Launch the program, click "File" at the top of the screen, then click "Open."

  • Navigate to your CHM file, then click the "Open" button.

  • Click "File" at the top of the screen, then choose the "Start Convert" option.

CHM to DOC Conversion with Softany

  • Navigate to the Softany CHM to DOC Converter website and click the red "Free Download" button. Choose the "Save" option, then select a location on your computer to store the file.

  • Double-click the downloaded file, then follow the installation prompts until the install has completed.

  • Launch the program, click the folder button next to "CHM File," then navigate to your CHM file and click the "Open" button.

  • Click the folder button next to "Word Document" and select a location on your computer for the output DOC file.

  • Type a name for the DOC file into the field next to "Document Title," then click the "Convert" button at the bottom of the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • With some of the conversion software, it is possible to pick and choose the "Help" topics that you wish to convert. For example, with the Dawning Soft converter, you simply select the topics you wish to include after the CHM file has been selected. This can be useful for specifying the help documents you are creating.
