Ammonia and washing soda are both strong cleaning agents. When combined, these ingredients make a powerful general purpose cleaner at a reduced cost compared to most commercial cleaners. This cleaner is safe for many hard household surfaces, but avoid using it on any surface that may be damaged by alkaline cleaners, such as wood floors -- both ammonia and washing soda are alkaline.
Things You'll Need
- Rubber gloves
- Eye goggles
- Washing soda
- Sponge mop
Put on rubber gloves, safety goggles and ventilate the area. Ammonia and washing soda cleaner is very strong-smelling and can irritate skin and eyes.
Combine ½ cup of ammonia, ½ cup of washing soda and 7 cups of warm water in a clean bucket, as advised by alpharubicon.com as a strong general purpose cleaner.
Place a sponge or sponge mop in the solution. Use it to wipe down dirty or greasy stove tops, cupboards, countertops and floors. Grease especially will come right up with this solution.
Rinse the surfaces when you are done cleaning. Use dampened sponges or towels and sufficient water to remove cleaner residue. Let surfaces air-dry or use a towel to buff them dry.
Tips & Warnings
- Never combine this cleaning solution with bleach. Ammonia mixed with bleach creates dangerous fumes.
- Mrs. Clean USA warns that ammonia softens and whitens the finish on wood flooring.
