Purchasing an HDTV is only the first step in taking full advantage of all that high-definition technology has to offer. You must also subscribe to high-definition service from your cable, satellite or IPTV provider and use an HD-capable connection to connect your equipment to the TV. Having an HD converter box installed in your home is just a matter of calling your provider and scheduling an upgrade, but there are a few important considerations to make beforehand.

1. Examine the audio and video connections on your TV to see what connection options are available to you. The most common types of HD connections are component and HDMI. Take note of which connection you wish to use with your HD converter box as you will need to specify that your box be compatible with this connection type.

2. Purchase the corresponding audio/video connection cable or cables. Install technicians sometimes need to use whatever type of connection they have with them, not necessarily the one you prefer. Having your own cable on hand for the install ensures that you will be able to use the connection type of your preference.

3. Contact your provider and schedule an upgrade to an HD converter box. Whether you use traditional cable, satellite TV, or an IPTV provider such as AT&T Uverse, you will, as noted, need to specify that your converter box supports the connection type that you wish to use.
