How to Wire an Invisible Fence

Invisible fences allow dogs to roam around the yard within a preset boundary, thus relieving you of the need to erect wooden or chain-link fences to secure your property. The fence wire is hidden underground and works together with a transmitter, receiver collar and wire. Before your dog can be trained with the underground fence, you must correctly install the invisible fence components. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location for the transmitter. Transmitters can be placed inside a garage, if winter temperatures in your area are not too low, or in a house on an outside wall. The transmitter needs to be near a power source and in a location where you can drill a 1/8-inch hole through the wall to the outside to feed the wire through.

    • 2

Mount the transmitter on the wall with the screws that came with the unit, using a screwdriver. Use the drill and 1/8-inch drill bit to make a hole slightly below the mounted transmitter for the wire feed.

    • 3

Dig a trench with a spade 3 inches deep around the yard where you want the boundary to be placed. Start at the outside wall where the transmitter is located and work your way around the containment area.

    • 4

Use a concrete saw to make a 2-inch-deep cut in concrete sidewalks or driveways if the boundary will include these areas. The cut should be straight or at least follow the boundary you have chosen.

    • 5

Feed the starting end of the wire into the house through the access hole. Attach it to the unplugged transmitter. Run the wire in the trench until you have the entire containment area done. Don't cover up the trench yet.

    • 6

Feed the end part of the wire through the access hole to the transmitter. Connect the wire to the transmitter. Plug in the transmitter to make sure everything is working. You will see a green light on the transmitter, which means that everything is functioning. Unplug the transmitter.

    • 7

Cover up the dirt trench with the dirt that you removed for the trench. Tamp down with your foot to make it firm. On the concrete, use silicone sealant to cover the wire in the 2-inch cut. The sealant should cover the trench and be flush with the surface of the concrete.

    • 8

Turn on the transmitter. A green light will appear, indicating that the containment area is set and ready to confine the dog. Place the red or white flags that came with the invisible fence kit every 3 to 4 feet along the boundary wire and 3 feet inside the boundary.
