Instructions

    • 1

Measure the window that is currently installed in the opening. Begin by measuring the width. Measure with a tape measure first from the bottom of the window. Measure across the window, and write down the measurement on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Repeat the same process for the middle of the window. Measure across the direct middle of the window, and write down the measurement. To determine the direct center of the window, measure down from the top, and mark at the halfway point with a pencil.

    • 3

Measure one more time at the top of the window. Repeat the procedure of the previous two measurements, and write down the results. Use the smallest of these three measurements for the size of the width.

    • 4

Measure the height of the window beginning on one side and measuring down. Write down the measurement, and repeat this procedure for the height by starting in the middle of the window. To determine the exact middle of the window, measure across and mark with a pencil in the direct center. Write down the height from the middle of the window.

    • 5

Repeat this procedure on the other side of the window, and write down the measurement. Use the lowest measurement for the height just like it was taken for the width.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some windows can also be measured by the rough opening size. The correct size window is then made to fit in the rough opening size.

  • Determining the exact measurement is crucial to getting the proper window size. If the measurements are off even slightly, the window may need to be reordered or the opening built out, which will require a lot of time and work. Make sure the measurements are exact before purchasing the windows.
