How to Paint Your Face Like a Dinosaur

How to Paint Your Face Like a Dinosaur thumbnail
Dinosaurs offer great inspiration for face painting.

Whether it's part of a Halloween costume, for a birthday party or just for fun, you can transform anyone's face into a dinosaur's visage. You can paint it cute or scary, depending on the prospective dinosaur's preference. Face painting is a safe alternative to purchased or hand-made face masks, which can obscure the wearer's vision. For all face painting, be sure to use paint created specifically for the face. Baby wipes or soap and water will remove this type of paint easily. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Dinosaur Face

    • 1

With the green paint and the brush, draw a triangle, point-side up, in the middle of your forehead. Draw a similar triangle on each side of the center triangle, points extending to the hairline. The triangles should look like a crown.

    • 2

Draw an outline of the rest of the face in the same green paint. Draw a shallow, U-shaped line from the bottom of the left cheekbone and across the upper lip, extending to the bottom of the right cheekbone. Draw a similar line below it to form a crescent. Included in this crescent is the lower lip and chin. Leave this crescent unpainted for now. Color in the rest of the outline using the green paint and the sponge. Use a darker green and another sponge around the eyes to create a shadow effect.

    • 3

With another sponge and the red paint, dab a soft circle about a half-inch below the lower lip. Line the crescent with black paint and the brush. Draw teeth with the brush and apply black paint within the crescent. Follow the outer border of green paint to outline the face.

    • 4

Outline the red circle in black to form the tongue. Color the teeth white. Fill in the rest of the mouth with black paint.

    Dinosaur Eye Mask

    • 5

Use a sponge and pink paint to color the bridge of the nose and both eyelids. Follow the outline of the pink paint with purple over the eyebrows and around both eyes.

    • 6

Color the eyelids with gray paint, extending to the eyebrows.

    • 7

Draw six half-inch, white triangles with the points outward and away from eyes at the edge of the purple paint: one above each eyebrow, one below each eye and one pointing toward each ear. Outline each triangle finely in black.

    • 8

With a brush and black paint, draw a rough, blotchy outline of the mask. Add spots along the bridge of the nose.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a more realistic depiction, you can add shadowing with a darker shade and highlighting with lighter shades.

  • Use cotton swabs to fix mistakes.

  • Use only paint specifically created for face painting. Use of other paints can be toxic.
