Use your iPhone to interact with GE's augmented reality program.

General Electric recently released a marketing website that features a new technology called augmented reality. Augmented reality uses a video camera attached to a personal computer to monitor visual ques in the display and "augment" them, while adding information or animation in the display window that ties to the physical objects seen with the camera. Most of these programs use a printed symbol to trigger the process, but it's possible to use an LCD display, like the Apple iPhone's screen, to achieve the same effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to GE's "Plug Into the Smart Grid" website on your computer's Internet browser (see Resources). Click on the "Open the Door To the Smart Grid" link (beneath the cupped hands icon) on the right side of the page.

    • 2

Click the link marked "Print One Here.>" beneath "Getting Started." A PDF file downloads to your computer desktop (click the "Save" button in the control bar if your browser displays the PDF automatically); this PDF contains the augmented reality icon. Leave the web page open on your computer.

    • 3

Open your email program and create a new message, entering your own email address in the "TO" field. This email address should be the account associated with your iPhone. Attach the PDF you saved in Step 2 to the message and click "Send."

    • 4

Tap "Mail" on your iPhone and open the email message you sent to yourself. Open the PDF attachment, and drag your thumb and forefinger away from each other across the screen to enlarge the green and black icon as big as the iPhone screen will allow.

    • 5

Click "Launch Wind Turbine" or "Launch Solar Energy" on the GE web page that's open on your computer's browser to start the augmented reality demonstration. Follow the website's instructions and hold your phone up to the computer's camera so the iPhone screen and icon face the camera lens.
