How to Make Your Diving Mask Waterproof

How to Make Your Diving Mask Waterproof thumbnail
Use the mask to see the underwater world.

Keeping a diving mask waterproof and watertight requires a bit of pre-planning and knowledge. A waterproof seal is essential for the proper use of a dive mask. When the mask fails to keep a water-tight seal, water fills the mask making it difficult to see and navigate. There are several tips to use should you need to waterproof your dive mask.

Things You'll Need

  • Waterproof super-glue
  • Dive mask neoprene strap
  • Anti-fog cream

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old strap on your dive mask. Thread the new neoprene strap through the mask's strap attachment mechanisms. Put the mask on and tighten the strap. Neoprene molds to the shape of your head better than hard rubber. This gives the mask a tighter fit and better water-proofing.

    • 2

Hold the mask underwater and watch for small, tiny air bubbles rising from the eye pieces or seams along the mask edge.

    • 3

Apply a generous coating of the waterproof super glue onto the cracks or seams where air bubbles rose when the mask was underwater. Use a clear super glue so visibility in the mask is not compromised.

    • 4

Pull your hair back as tight and far as possible. If your hair is long enough for a pony tail, tie it into the pony tail and place the mask strap where it is not impeded by the hair. Tighten the strap.

    • 5

Store the mask in its hard case. Keep it out of the sun and in a cool dark place. The sun's rays can break down the plastic, leading to less tan water-tight or waterproof seals.

    • 6

Apply a generous coating of de-fog cream onto the mask lenses before each dive. You will be less apt to have to bleed the mask when diving as a result of less fog, giving a more waterproof and watertight seal with the mask.
