How to Adjust a 1997 Toyota Avalon Headlight

The 1997 Toyota Avalon has a dual headlight system contained within one unit. Headlight assemblies fall out of alignment with normal age, damage or replacement of parts. The Avalon headlight assembly adjusts using screws located on the top side of the headlight near the fender and on the inside edge of the headlight assembly (visible from the front of the headlight). Adjusting the headlights takes about 20 minutes to do properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your car directly in front of a flat, vertical surface like a wall. Park the vehicle as close to the wall as possible and make sure you have enough room to back up the vehicle 25 feet.

    • 2

Mark on the wall the location of the headlights for both passenger and driver side. Place an X with masking tape on the wall for each headlight so that the marks are in the same position and at the same height as your headlights. Place a strip of vertical tape on the wall at the center point of the vehicle between the two headlight marks. The vertical mark will be used to line up your vehicle properly.

    • 3

Back up the vehicle to a distance of 25 feet. Make sure you are centered on the vertical mark. Verify by looking through the back window to the wall and make sure the vertical tape mark corresponds to the center of the hood and trunk.

    • 4

Turn your headlights on. The low beams should be positioned so that the top of the headlight beam is flush with the mark. The headlight beams will make a circle on the wall; the mark should intersect that circle at the topmost aspect. The headlight circle should be centered vertically with the mark on both passenger and driver sides.

Adjust the headlights for the passenger and driver side so that they are positioned in accordance with Step 4. The adjustment screws are on the top of the headlight assembly adjacent to the fender for vertical adjustment. Horizontal adjustment screws are located inside the outer edge of the headlight assembly on the fender side of the headlight. The horizontal adjustment screw is visible from the front of the headlight. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to adjust the headlights accordingly.
