How to Repair a Scratch on a Wood Surface
Wood has a soft surface that's susceptible to scratches or dents. Some scratches are superficial and can disappear if you wipe with a soft cloth. Other marks run deeper and require a smoothing process to eliminate the blemish. If you allow the scratch to remain, it can widen from stress on the wood surface. Dirt also gathers into the mark, making it more noticeable. Remove scratches without harming the integrity of the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Wipe dust from the wood with a clean rag.

Press a steel-wool pad gently against one end of the scratch. Move the steel wool up the scratch, using light pressure. Raise the pad and back it to the bottom of the scratch. Slide the pad up the scratch again.

Wipe residue from the scratch with the rag. Inspect the scratch. Repeat the rubbing process with the steel wool, moving the pad in one direction only over the scratch. Wipe clean and examine the mark after two to three swipes with the steel wool. Continue until the scratch disappears.

Spray the wood surface with a furniture polish and wipe clean with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings
As the scratch diminishes, use a lighter touch with each pass of the steel wool.
Do not use furniture polish on wood floors as it can make them slippery. Use a cleaner for wood floors only.
