How to Reinstall & Reboot XP
Sometimes a forced reboot can help realign your troublesome computers. Other times, the only thing to save your computer is a complete reinstall of the Microsoft Windows operating system. A drastic measure, for sure, but sometimes it's the only way to really be sure that pesky virus is gone from your hard drive. The process of rebooting and reinstalling Windows XP is simple.

1
Open the Windows "Start" menu and select "Restart" to reboot the computer, after the re-installation completes. You can also manually shut down the system by holding down the power button. Press the power button again to restart the system. If the reboot did not help and you need to reinstall the OS, move to the next step.

2
Insert the XP CD into the computer. Restart the system as outlined in Step 1. The computer should boot into the XP CD, but you may need to press a key on the keyboard to do so.

3
Press the "Enter" key when the first Windows screen appears. This is simply a "Welcome" screen. Read and accept the Windows license agreement. Press "F8" to accept.
-
4
Select the "C" drive as the drive to reinstall XP on. The earlier version of XP should have been detected. You can optionally completely erase the old XP and the drive, or simply overwrite it. If you decide to erase (re-format) the drive, press "D" and follow the remaining on-screen instructions.

5
Process through the last bit of the XP installation by following the few on-screen instructions as they appear. The system will reboot a number of times during the process. When finished, the XP desktop will load.
