How to Look for a Job as a Typist
Typing jobs come in a variety of contexts and content. Legal and medical transcription, data entry, typing up essays or resumes from handwritten or draft-form, and typing documents are just a few ways you can make money typing. Many of these positions can be done from home. However, competition for these jobs can be stiff. Typing is a skill many people have, but being competitive in the field requires specialized experience and background to do a particular type of typing quickly and well.

Apply with companies that hire transcriptionists. You will listen to audio files and type what you hear. Take a transcription training course if you are inexperienced. This may also help you get a job as you will have demonstrated to the employer your seriousness in working as a typist. A list of some companies that hire transcriptionists can be found on the Work at Home Careers and the Worldwide Work at Home sites.

Find typing jobs on freelance job sites such as ELance and ODesk. Typing jobs on freelancing sites go by a variety of names, including virtual assistant, office assistant, clerical assistant, secretary, personal assistant, transcriptionist, typist, word processor and others. Assistant positions may require a lot of typing, but they also require research, customer service and other clerical job responsibilities. Read the entire job description before you apply.

Tips & Warnings
Join an online work at home mom forum (whether you are a mom or not) to learn about the latest scams and real opportunities for typists.
Do not pay money to get a typing job. An advertisement stating that you have to pay money to become a typist is likely a scam. Avoid advertisements promising quick and easy money. Many of them turn out to be affiliate marketing programs that do not pay you much of anything in the end. Do not give out personal information before you get to a real application in the job search process.
Freelance bidding sites usually require you to compete with several others for a job. It may take a while to get typing jobs, and you may need to work for lower wages than you would like, initially. After building a reputation on the site, you may be able to charge more.
