How to Improve a Bad Performance Review

A performance review is an assessment of your performance at your place of employment, by either your supervisor or a member of upper management. In many cases, a bad performance review indicates you may be replaced if your performance doesn't improve. Improving your performance before the next review isn't difficult. Your subsequent performance review will show the improvement necessary to keep your place at your current job.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask questions during the performance review to clarify anything you don't understand. If your performance review is written and not done in person, ask your employer for a meeting in which you can clarify points of your review that aren't satisfactory.

    • 2

Review the notes of your performance review as well as the feedback you've obtained from your employer and make a list of the key areas where you are not meeting company standards. These are the areas to focus on. Write these key areas on paper and beside each area, write down one or two ways you can improve.

Ask your employer periodically if there is improvement in your performance. You don't need to wait for the next performance review to determine whether you are improving. Asking your employer for input helps you focus on improvement as you go, which can help ensure your next performance review is satisfactory.
