Independent health insurance agents market, solicit and sell health insurance and related products to individuals and businesses. In addition to major medical plans, health agents my also sell medigap insurance or Medicare Advantage insurance to seniors, long-term and short-term disability, long-term care insurance, dental and visual insurance and so-called "dread disease" policies. You can market yourself to individuals and families or pursue the group market, soliciting organizations and businesses for larger enrollments.

Enroll in an insurance licensing examination course for your state. You can take an online course or attend an in-person class session. Depending on your prior knowledge and experience in financial services, you may be ready to take the course after about a week of intensive study.

Health insurance agents are frequently sued due to misunderstandings about the policies they sell. Before soliciting any insurance policies, consider purchasing an errors and omissions policy, which protects you from liability if you are sued in the course of your business as an agent. Your manager should be able to refer you to a good errors and omissions insurance carrier.
