How to Become an Independent Health Insurance Agent

Independent health insurance agents market, solicit and sell health insurance and related products to individuals and businesses. In addition to major medical plans, health agents my also sell medigap insurance or Medicare Advantage insurance to seniors, long-term and short-term disability, long-term care insurance, dental and visual insurance and so-called "dread disease" policies. You can market yourself to individuals and families or pursue the group market, soliciting organizations and businesses for larger enrollments.

      Enroll in an insurance licensing examination course for your state. You can take an online course or attend an in-person class session. Depending on your prior knowledge and experience in financial services, you may be ready to take the course after about a week of intensive study.

      Take the insurance licensing exam required in your state.

      Contact the insurers you would like to represent. Typically, you can fill out an online application for an appointment via that company's website. You must be both licensed in your state and appointed by a company to sell that company's insurance products. You may want to represent a number of different lines of medical insurance, as well as one or more life insurance companies.

  • Health insurance agents are frequently sued due to misunderstandings about the policies they sell. Before soliciting any insurance policies, consider purchasing an errors and omissions policy, which protects you from liability if you are sued in the course of your business as an agent. Your manager should be able to refer you to a good errors and omissions insurance carrier.
