Replacing the turn signal bulbs in a Beetle is straightforward and easy to do.

If you activate the turn signal on your VW New Beetle and it seems to be flashing more quickly than usual, you probably have a burned-out bulb. After you've determined which bulb has blown, avoid a ticket or an accident by replacing it quickly. Fortunately, replacing the turn signal bulb in your 2003 Beetle is a simple task you can do yourself--without a trip to the auto repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

      Raise the hood if either front bulb has blown. Locate an orange plastic cover behind the turn signal lens. Pry the cover off with a flat head screwdriver.

      Remove the Phillips head screw and unclip the lens. Remove the old bulb by turning it counterclockwise and pulling out. Replace the new bulb and turn it clockwise as far as it will go.

      Replace the lens and secure it with the screw. Click the orange cover back into place. Activate the turn signal to test the bulb.

      Raise the trunk if either rear bulb has blown. Insert a flat head screwdriver into the slot in the access panel located behind the rear light assembly; pop the panel off by prying up. Unscrew the star-shaped knob counterclockwise and remove it.

      Locate a small gap in the light lens on the outside of the car. Insert a flat head screwdriver and pry the holding clip up. Pull the assembly out of the housing. At the back of the assembly, locate the turn signal bulb holder. Turn it counterclockwise and pull out.

      Remove the old bulb by turning it counterclockwise and pulling out. Replace the new bulb and turn it clockwise as far as it will go.

      Insert the bulb holder back into the lens and turn it clockwise until it locks into place. Return the light to its housing. Replace the black plastic knob and plastic cover. Activate the turn signal to test the bulb.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wearing gloves when replacing the bulb avoids oil and grease contamination from your hands that could reduce the life of the bulb.

  • To save time in the future, replace all the bulbs in the taillight, not just the one that blew.
