How to Enter the Validation Key in Windows

Save

In a bid to prevent piracy of their Windows operating system, Microsoft requires you to enter a unique product key and validation of Windows installations through the Windows network. If you do not do this, your copy of Windows may not work properly and you will not have access to all of the features that Windows has to offer.

  • Open Internet Explorer, and navigate to the following page (see Resources):

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/PKUInstructions.aspx

This website may not work properly with other Internet browsers, so for best results stick with Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

  • Select which version of Windows you currently have installed.

  • Download and run the Windows Product Key Update Tool.

  • Enter your Windows product key, and click "Continue." The product key can be found on your computer's Certificate of Authenticity, usually located on the back of your desktop's tower or on the bottom of your laptop.

  • Select the check box to restart your computer, and click "Finished."

  • Go to the Windows Validation Web page (see Resources) once your computer has restarted.

  • Select "Validate Windows" to validate your Windows installation and product key. Once the validation has been confirmed, your copy of Windows will work properly.
