How to Apply for Food Stamps in New Jersey
In New Jersey, low-income families can apply for assistance with purchasing food. The food stamps program is a federally-funded program that provides monthly funding to purchase food. Qualifying recipients can use food stamp benefits at authorized dealers. To qualify for assistance, families must meet certain income and citizenship requirements. The food stamp program within the state is administered by the Department of Human Services.

Download and print the application for food stamps from the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services website (see Resources). Alternatively, you can contact your county's Board of Social Services and request that an application be mailed to you.

Complete the application in its entirety. Skipping a section or failing to answer a question could result in a delay in determining if you are eligible for benefits.

Gather the personal documents needed to determine if you qualify for benefits. You are required to present your driver's license or birth certificate, Social Security card and proof of residency, such as a lease, when applying for benefits. This information is required for every member of your household.

Gather proof of your resources and income documents. Resources include bank accounts and mutual funds. You need to provide statements detailing the value of each. Use current paycheck stubs, tax returns and W-2 forms for proof of income. If you are receiving benefits such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or child support, you need to provide a statement for each.

Submit your application and documents in person at your local Social Services office. Copies of your documents will be made at the office.

Attend an interview to determine if you qualify for food stamps. If a caseworker is available when you submit your application, the interview may be conducted at that time. If not, you should receive an appointment time and date for the interview in the mail.

Wait for a determination letter regarding your request for assistance. A letter will be mailed to you within 30 days of submitting your application and documents. If you are approved, an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card will be mailed to the address you provided on the application.
