How to Easily Make Firewood
Gather your wood before you head off into the backcountry for a camping excursion as most public lands in the United States prohibit the collection of firewood. For regions where firewood collecting is allowed, such as parts of the US National Forest, use a few time honored tips. Do not cut green and living trees down to make the firewood on public lands. Collect only dead or fallen wood.

1
Empty the old backpack and head out onto the property where you wish to collect the firewood.
-
2
Search for branches that have fallen from trees, or old trees that are dead or have fallen from age.
-
-
3
Break off the branches or parts of the dead tree by using your hands and legs. Try and get the pieces around 12 inches long, and no wider than 2 inches in diameter. Place them in the backpack, lengthwise and fill until the weight is a reasonable level for you to carry to the campsite.
-
4
Push stacks of old leaves from the ground. Look for hidden dead wood under the fallen leaves. Collect these pieces for burning. Bring a large quantity of the dried leaves with you to use as a fire starter.
-
5
Saw larger wood pieces into smaller and useable pieces with the hand saw. Position the wood pieces so they rest on the ground and use the criss-cross saw motion to get through the rounds.
