How to Learn Persian Farsi

The Persian language, sometimes also called Farsi, is the primary language spoken in Iran. It is also spoken in Afghanistan and Armenia. Like any other language, you can learn Persian Farsi using a variety of different sources and methods. Online resources are available for ambitious individuals who wish to be self taught; while local classes, private tutors and immersion groups are available for those who need a social learning environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll in a local class that teaches first-year or beginner Persian. Some community colleges may have single classes that you can attend without officially enrolling in the college, while others may have a certification program in Persian. A local class will allow you to socialize with other individuals who share your interest in learning Farsi, and will give you opportunities for conversation in the foreign language.

    • 2

Hire a private tutor. Unlike a local class, a private tutor will be able to tailor her curriculum directly to your needs. You may be able to find local tutors by placing an ad in your local newspaper, or by inquiring at a local college.

    • 3

Purchase a self-study Farsi kit. Several companies offer language kits in Persian Farsi, including Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur and BYKI. If you cannot afford a home study program, or if you're simply looking for material to supplement a class or tutor, several online resources are available for free that offer common phrases, handwriting tools and vocabulary games. Three free online Farsi resources include EasyPersian.com, FarsiDic.com and MyLanguageExchange.com.

    • 4

Watch television, movies and online videos in Persian. Enabling subtitles on a Farsi video may allow you to pick up sentence word order and vocabulary over time, as well as aid in proper pronunciation and listening skills.

    • 5

Join an immersion group. An immersion group is a collection of individuals with similar skill levels in a specific language, such as Farsi, who get together a few times a month and converse with each other only in that language. An immersion group will give you real-world speaking and listening skills that a recorded lesson plan cannot. You may be able to find a group in your area by looking online or on bulletin boards at your local college.
