A Step-by-Step Functional Resume

A functional resume highlights strengths and skills and is especially suited for someone with a great deal of specific experience in one job field or skill or for someone with limited job experience or gaps in employment. It's also good for those who have had a variety of job experiences, not all in the same career field. While it contains job history information and education background, the focus is on the person's job skills.

Instructions

  1. A Step-by-Step Functional Resume

    • 1

Center your contact information in bold, clean font at the top of the resume.

    • 2

List your educational background in the first section under the subheading titled Education.

    • 3

List in the second section your skills, dividing these into separate categories such as communication, technology, research, writing, interpersonal or managerial skills. Give supporting details in each subsection but make it brief.

    • 4

List in the third section, under Work Experience, jobs held listed by title, then employer name and dates employed.

    • 5

Polish the resume paying special attention to the skills section as that is the main focus of the functional resume. Make sure you've clustered the job skills in a logical and professional manner and in a way that best sells your assets to an employer.
