How to Create a Career Brochure Lesson Plan in MS Publisher
While students may do the majority of their communicating electronically, such as text, e-mail and instant message, a classroom is an ideal place to reinforce the relevance of hard-copy documents such as brochures. A lesson plan involving the creation of brochures can help students realize how the marketing materials are a quick way to get information out and combine good writing skills, artistic layout design features and the importance of proofreading. Use Microsoft Publisher's quick-start brochure feature to get students involved in creating their own brochures with an eye toward their futures, with a career focus.

1
Ask students to choose a career to feature within the brochure. Research career information such as educational requirements, experience to move up through the profession and where to get training, such as community colleges, graduate schools and apprenticeships.
-
2
Show the class Microsoft Publisher's brochure template options, available from the "Popular Publication Types" screen. Have students select brochure templates, open them and scroll through the two pages to get a feel for the design.
-
-
3
Instruct students to replace the brochure's main headlines with headlines about the careers, such as "Education," "Job Titles," "Daily Tasks" and "Benefits."
-
4
Help students input information about the careers in the article sections/text boxes throughout the brochures under each headline. To replace text, students will need to click a text box, which will then be highlighted, then type directly over the information with their own about the career.
-
5
Show students how to search Publisher's in-program collection of stock artwork for images to add to the career brochure. Find both photographs and cartoon-like images with Publisher's "Insert" menu and the "Clip Art" option. Students will need to type a word or phrase, such as "briefcase," "waitress," "newscaster" or "veterinarian" into the "Search for" box, click "Go," scroll through the results and double-click images to add them to the brochure.
-
6
Coach students to save their work by clicking the "File" menu and selecting "Save As," then typing a name for the Publisher brochure. Ask them to switch brochures with each other to proofread work for typographical, spelling or grammatical errors and to show off their designs and research.
