How to Change an HP LaserJet Cartridge

No matter what model HP laser printer you own, eventually you will need to change the toner cartridge. You will know that the current toner cartridge is running low when you start to see faded areas and dropouts on the printed documents. When you see these symptoms, it is time to purchase and install a new printer cartridge that will allow your HP printer to continue printing the documents you need.

  • Open the toner cartridge cover. For large format HP laser printers, the toner cartridge door is on the right-hand side of the printer. For smaller laser printers, the cover is at the front of the machine.

  • Grasp the handle of the used toner cartridge and pull it out of the printer. Set it aside for recycling.

  • Remove the new toner cartridge from the box and pull off the orange tab that holds the toner in place during shipment. Remove the tape at the center of the toner cartridge. You must remove these packing materials before you install the cartridge.

  • Shake the toner cartridge back and forth several times to distribute the toner powder evenly. Hold the new toner cartridge by the handle and slowly lower it into the printer. Continue to lower the cartridge until it snaps into place.

  • Close the toner cartridge cover. Send a test page to the printer.
