How to Get the Best Shadow Effect in MS Publisher

Microsoft Publisher -- the desktop publishing and layout component of the Microsoft Office Suite Professional version -- offers a way to quickly create and compile materials such as newsletters, greeting cards, menus, resumes, fliers, signs and advertisements. Using Publisher's quick-start templates, you'll be creating publications with just a few clicks. To give a little extra emphasis to items in your documents, add shadowing. Whether it is subtle shading or dramatic darkening, shadowing helps to attract readers' eyes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Publisher, click the "File" tab and select "Open." Browse to an existing Publisher document. Double-click the file; it opens in the Publisher workspace.

    • 2

Scroll to an image, graphic, chart or photograph to which you would like to add shadowing.

    • 3

Click once on the picture and a pink "Picture Tools" tab appears at the top of the screen. Click the tab.

    • 4

Click the "Shadow Effects" button on the toolbar/ribbon below the tab. Without clicking, hover the cursor over the different shadow options in the drop-down menu and watch how the picture's shadow changes. Click a shadow effect to apply the shadow to the image.

    • 5

Click the cursor inside a text box. Select the purple "Text Box Tools" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Shadow" button in the "Effects" section of the toolbar/ribbon under the tab; the button has a large letter "A." Notice that the text instantly receives a shadow behind it, which makes the letters appear to be standing up on the page.

    • 6

Add additional shadows as desired throughout the document.

    • 7

Click the "File" tab, select "Save As," give the document a new name to preserve the original and save it to your computer.
