You can use the Garmin 640 on land or at sea.

You can find your way around at sea or on land with the Garmin GPSMAP 640. The navigator is a full-featured marine chartplotter as well as a road navigator. The Garmin 640 can receive weather and traffic updates depending on which mode your GPS is using. It also has preloaded marine data as well as preloaded maps and points of interests for land use.

Instructions

  1. Marine Mode

    • 1

Check to see if your Garmin 640 is set to marine mode. It should show a picture of a boat at the top-center of the display. If it shows a car, touch the car and it should change to a boat.

    • 2

Touch "Chart," "Navigation Chart," and then touch the place you want to navigate to to choose your destination. Zoom in and out with the "+" and "-" keys. You can also choose your destination through the "Where To?" screen" or by selecting "Waypoints," "Routes," "Tracks," "Offshore Services" or "Search by Name."

    • 3

Touch "Navigate To" then "Go To" once you have selected your destination. A magenta line shows the direct course to your destination. If you veer off course to avoid shallow water or land, a purple line guides you back to the direct course.

    • 4

Touch "Where To?" then "Offshore Services" to search the available marine services. The list will show you the nearest 50 locations in the category you choose. Once you find a service, touch "Go To" to navigate there. You can also touch "Where To?" and then "Search by Name" if you know the name of a marine service.

    • 5

Touch "Mark" from any screen to save a current location as a waypoint. A waypoint is any location your may want to return to such as a fishing port, marina or service station.

    • 6

Touch "Dashboard" then "Compass" to bring up the compass screen. The compass screen shows your current heading, your course to steer and your corrected course.

    • 7

Touch "Chart" and then "Fishing Chart" to access fishing charts. You can view the contour and depth of the area on these charts.

    Automotive Mode

    • 8

Turn your Garmin 640 to automotive mode. Make sure there is a picture of a car in the top-center of your display. If there is a picture of a boat, touch it to change it to a car.

    • 9

Touch "Where To?" and "Address" to begin setting a destination. Change the state, country or province if necessary. Then, touch "Spell City" and enter the city and postal code. Touch "Done" when you have the information entered. Select the city from the list.

    • 10

Type in the address number and touch "Done." Then, put in the street name and touch "Done." Select the street from the list if necessary, and then touch the address if necessary.

    • 11

Follow the directions given by your GPS. Your course is outlined by a magenta line. If you move off course, the Garmin 640 will recalculate the route and give you new directions.

    • 12

Touch "Where To?" and then "Go Home" to set your home location. Choose from one of the options: "Enter your address," "Use your current location" or "Choose from a list of recently found locations." Once you have a home location set, you can touch "Where to?" and "Go Home" to map out a course to that location.
