How to Cook a Nathan's Hot Dog

Save

It was 1916 when Nathan Handwerker opened his first hot dog stand on New York's Coney Island, selling handmade frankfurters based on his wife Ida's recipe. Today, Nathan's Famous Frankfurters are sold in all 50 states, and at over 20,000 restaurants and grocery stores. If you want to cook the same hot dog that was served by FDR to Churchill and Stalin at Yalta, you just need a little heat and an appetite.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp knife
  • Stove, grill or microwave oven
  • Beer, optional
  • Pierce the skin of each hot dog a couple times with the tip of a sharp knife or fork. This keeps the hot dog from bursting as it heats.

  • Grill it. On a hot indoor grill or outdoor barbecue grill, place the hot dogs perpendicular to the grate for a striped barber pole effect. Rotate the dog after a minute or two, and cook until heated through.

  • Boil it in beer. You can use plain water, but beer adds flavor. Bring the liquid to a boil in a medium saucepan, and add the hot dogs. Boil them a few minutes until heated through.

  • Microwave it. Put the dog inside a bun, wrap it in a paper towel, and microwave on high power for 1 minute. This cooks the hot dog and steams the bun at the same time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Nathan's Famous hot dogs are fully cooked out of the package.
