How to Use Ichthammol 20
Ichthammol 20% is an ointment that is sometimes called "Black Salve" (for its black color) or "drawing salve" (because it appears to "draw out" infection). According to Baar Products, maker of the product, you can use icthammol to treat boils, splinters, stings, spider bites, and wounds. Drugs.com reports that ichthammol ointment is also available in a veterinary preparation, which is used to treat horse wounds. In both preparations, only a few steps are necessary for application.

For Human Use

Cleanse the affected area thoroughly with mild soap and water.

Dry area gently but thoroughly.

Apply ointment to affected area.

Cover area with a sterilized gauze bandage, if desired. Icthammol ointment is black and may stain fabrics.

Repeat steps 1 through 4 one to two times daily or as directed by a physician.
For Veterinary Use

Cleanse and dry area gently.

Apply ointment to affected area.

Cover area with a loose gauze bandage.

Repeat steps 1 through 3 one to two times daily or as directed by a veterinarian.

Tips & Warnings
Consult your physician or veterinarian before using icthammol.
If bite/wound does not improve or worsens within a few days, discontinue use and contact your physician or veterinarian.
