In 2009, OverDrive announced iPod and Apple compatibility and surprised iPod owners by offering the service free with a simple download. Now you can hear audiobooks on the go without bending Internet laws.

  • iTunes v9.1 (or newer)
  • OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer)
  • Windows OS

Instructions

  1. Making iPod Compatible

    • 1

      Launch the iTunes program on your computer. If it is not at least version 9.1, update it when you're prompted. You must be connected to the Internet to update.

      Plug your iPod into your computer, and click its icon when it appears in the left-side panel of iTunes under the heading "Devices." This brings up the "Summary" screen, which gives basic details about your iPod.

      Click the box next to 'Manually manage music...' if a check mark is not already in the box. Click "Apply" to save the setting.

    Making OverDrive Compatible

      Run your OverDrive program. If it isn't at least version 3.2.0.5, allow it to update when the program starts. You must be connected to the Internet to update.

      Enable the OverDrive Transfer Wizard after the update completes. Any audiobooks you already have will stay on your hard drive. Only books published by participating publishers can be transferred from this window to your iPod

      Select an audiobook from the list of files saved, and click the transfer button to move it to your USB device.
