Many effective resources exist for Catholic Sunday school kindergarten teachers.

Catholic religious educators (also called catechists) must generate engaging and effective ways of sharing the Catholic faith with their students every week during Sunday school. Kindergarten students in particular are receptive to innovative, faith-based crafts, games, and songs. Creating a solid lesson plan for a kindergarten Sunday school class can sometimes be a challenge, however, due to time constraints and limited funding. Many resources are available to help catechists formulate unique and compelling kindergarten lesson plans to help their students grow in faith.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult the faith education manual that the church provides (if available). These workbooks usually provide guidelines for instruction (based on age and grade level), lesson plan suggestions, and the weekly Gospel readings.

    • 2

Focus the class on reading and discussing that Sunday's Gospel passage and how it relates to the students, if no church-provided manual is available. Kindergarten-age students understand more than most teachers may think, but complex concepts need to be broken down into simple words that kindergarteners will understand more easily.

    • 3

Incorporate activities, songs, games, crafts, and discussions relating to a particular holiday (such as Christmas, Easter, St. Patrick's Day, All Saints' Day, and so on) or a specific feast day that's approaching (St. Luke, St. Therese of Lisieux, and so on). Many resources exist on the Internet (see Resources) to help with generating faith-based activity ideas.

    • 4

Provide a church tour for the students during class. Explain to them the parts of the church, including areas such as the tabernacle, altar, sacristy, fellowship hall, and where the choir sings. Helping the kindergarten students feel more comfortable and familiar with the church may even encourage them to take more interest in Mass.

    • 5

Open and close the Sunday school class with a prayer said together as a group.
