How to Change the Fuel Filter of an Oldsmobile Intrigue

Save

The fuel filter in the Oldsmobile Intrigue is located under the car in front of the fuel tank. The purpose of the fuel filter is to pull out any debris and sediment that may have been sucked up by the fuel pump in the tank. Harmful sediment and debris can be hazardous to the engine. Replacement of the filter should be done every 30,000 miles.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Socket wrench
  • Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Locate the fuse panel behind the battery. Open the relay cover and locate the fuel pump relay. The cover will have a diagram to pinpoint the exact relay.

  • Pull the relay out of the fuse panel and place it to the side. Start the car and allow it to idle until it stalls out. This will depressurize the fuel system.

  • Locate the fuel filter underneath the car directly under the rear driver side door. The filter will be a foot in front of the fuel tank.

  • Unscrew the outlet side with an open-end wrench. Use a second wrench to hold the stationary nut on the filter; this will prevent the filter from turning. Pull the fuel line away from the filter.

  • Squeeze the clip on the inlet side by hand and pull off the inlet pipe of the fuel filter. Pull the fuel line away from the fuel filter.

  • Unbolt the filter from the mounting bracket to release the filter. Replace with the new filter. Tighten the mounting bracket with a socket wrench.

  • Push the inlet line onto the fuel filter by hand. The line will lock in place.

  • Screw the outlet line onto the fuel filter by hand. Tighten with a wrench to ensure the line is secured. Use a second wrench to prevent the filter from turning.

  • Insert the fuel pump relay into the fuse panel. Close the fuse panel cover back onto the fuse panel.

  • Turn the ignition to the "run" position and hold for three seconds. This will engage the fuel pump to prime the line. Turn the key off and repeat again. Attempt to crank the car to circulate the fuel into the fuel line.

  • Allow the car to idle for five minutes. Inspect for any fuel leaks before turning off the car.

  • Turn the car off. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • The filter can be purchased at any local automotive parts store.
  • Use caution when working around gasoline. Gasoline is highly toxic and flammable.
