How to Retrieve a Lost WEP Password

Retrieving the WEP key in Windows requires access to your router's configuration utility. Trying to view the key in Windows 7 is possible but will only work when connected to the wireless network. Windows automatically encrypts your WEP pass phrase with the "*" character. The router configuration utility also has a password, however, unless you have already set the password, you can find it on the underside of your router.

Instructions

  1. Router Configuration Utility

    • 1

Click the "Start" button and click the "Network" link.

    • 2

Double-click on the "Internet Gateway Device" under the Other Devices section. Your default Internet browser will launch and take you to the router configuration utility.

    • 3

Type in the user name and password. If you did not set one up beforehand, the user name is usually "admin," and the password is the manufacturer of the router. Click the "OK" button.

    • 4

Click the "Local Network" icon and select the "Wireless" option. Your WEP key appears under the "WEP Key:" section.

    Network Settings

    • 5

Double-click the "Network" icon in the Windows notification bar and click the "Open Network and Sharing Center.

    • 6

Click the "Manage Wireless Networks" option from the left pane and choose the network for which you wish to display the WEP key.

    • 7

Click the "Security" tab and click the "Show Character" check box. Your WEP key displays in the "Network Security Key" field.

Tips & Warnings

  • When entering your router's configuration utility, it is wise to enter a new WEP key for added security.
