When you experience issues with your Nano's click wheel, try updating the software and restoring the device.

While the squat shape of the third generation iPod Nano is distinct compared to previous editions, the device features the familiar click wheel for user navigation. Nano click wheel problems may be easily resolved with software updates or by restoring the device. However, disassembling an iPod will void your warranty, and iFixIt recommends that you consider purchasing another iPod before attempting to replace the front panel and repair the click wheel yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Charge your iPod Nano completely, then flip the hold switch on and off. Press the menu and center buttons on the click wheel down at the same time and wait until you see the Apple logo before releasing them.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 with your iPod plugged into either your computer or the wall outlet if it was unsuccessful. Try moving the USB cord to the other port in your computer if the wheel is still not responding.

    • 3

Restart your computer. Click "Software Updates" (for Macs) or "Windows Updates" under "Tools" (for PCs) to see if you need any updates, including iTunes. Update if necessary.

    • 4

Launch iTunes and select your iPod under "Devices." Select "Check for Updates" and click "Yes" if there is new software available for your iPod.

    • 5

Check the click wheel. If you are still experiencing difficulties, click the device again in iTunes, then click "Restore," which will erase all of your files. The files are stored in your iTunes library; however, if you've saved any just to the iPod disk, back them up first.

Tips & Warnings

  • If restoring your iPod Nano fails to solve click wheel issues, call your local Apple store for further help.
