How to Register a Used Car in Texas

Proper documentation must be completed in a used-car purchase in Texas.

A used-car buyer in Texas must register and title the vehicle in his name within 20 days from the date of sale or transfer. The buyer must sign the back of the title and get it processed at the county tax office. The documentation process requires the seller and the buyer to sign a joint statement known as a Vehicle Title and Registration Form. The buyer must go to the county tax office to submit the application and pay the registration fees and taxes.

Instructions

1. Purchase automobile insurance on the vehicle. Get proof of insurance documentation from the insurer.

2. Ensure that you have all the necessary paperwork. You will need proof that the vehicle has been inspected, proof of insurance, the odometer reading if the vehicle is less than 10 years old and the original title or ownership documentation.

3. Calculate the amount that you will owe in fees.

4. Go to the county tax office. Present the paperwork to the officials. Pay the vehicle taxes. Purchase the license plates and stickers for the plates and windshield.

5. Affix the license plate to the car.
