How to Remove a Back Tire on a Moped

Whether it's because of a flat tire, or you receive a new moped tire, you will need to remove the original back tire to replace it. Although this isn't impossible to do by yourself, it does require some time and effort. Plan to work for about an hour on this project. If done with care and patience, you can successfully remove your old tire and replace it with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 wrenches
  • Tire iron
  • Loosen the rear brake cable bolt on the right-hand side of the wheel and slide the brake cable up and out of its holder. Let the cable sit next to the holder while you are taking the wheel off the moped.

  • Place both wrenches on either ends of the axle bolt on the back wheel. This is the long bolt in the center of the wheel. Turn the wrenches in opposite directions to loosen it up.

  • Move the chain off to a side, and rotate the wheel one revolution. The chain will derail itself from the back wheel sprocket.

  • Push the wheel forward, dropping it from the wheel holder on the moped. It will now be completely separated from the moped.

  • Remove the valve cap and the little bolt holding the valve on.

  • Place one tire iron underneath the tire's side, and flip it over so the tire's side is hanging over the wheel.

  • Take your other tire iron, and starting from the right side, flip the tire's side over the wheel. Keep moving around the wheel, until one side of the tire is completely off the wheel.

  • Grasp the tire with one hand, and pull off to the side where your tire's side is hanging off the wheel. It will come completely off the wheel, and you now have a separated wheel and tire assembly.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are uncomfortable working with your moped, consider taking your scooter into a repair shop to have the tire removed.
