While there isn't much you can do about your Web server's download speeds from your FTP client, it is possible to speed up your downloads by downloading multiple files simultaneously. Instead of downloading one or two files at a time, download several at once. You can increase the number of simultaneous downloads in the FileZilla FTP client using its Site Manager options.
Click Filezilla's "File" menu and select "Site Manager."
Click the "Transfer Settings" tab and check the box next to the "Limit Number of Simultaneous Connections" option.
Type the number "10" into the new text area, maximizing the amount of connections the program allows you to have.
Access the Web server and choose 10 or more files to download. Note any change to the speed as the files transfer to your computer.
Tips & Warnings
- Servers may be faster to use at different times of the day based on how many users are logged in. If you find the server is slow, try again at a different time of day.
- If uploads are significantly slower than downloads, your Internet service may be the problem. Upload speeds of asynchronous Internet services, like ADSL, may only be 10 percent of the download speeds.
