How to Make Miniature Columns

If you are preparing a report or project on Ancient Rome or Greece, you can provide a visual element by making a thematic diorama. The more realistic your diorama appears, the more captivating it will be for your classmates to see as you give your report. One way to make the diorama realistic-looking is to include imagery and structures from the period, such as miniature stone columns.

Things You'll Need

  • Polymer clay
  • Popsicle stick
  • Toothpick
  • Cookie sheet
  • Oven
  • Roll a 2-inch piece of white or gray polymer clay into a long cylinder.

  • Press a Popsicle stick into the top of the cylinder and pull it downward. This will carve out a line along the length of the cylinder. Repeat this process around the entire cylinder until you have carved four or five lines.

  • Press a toothpick along the lines to deepen the impression set by the Popsicle stick.

  • Repeat this process until you have created as many columns as you require.

  • Place the columns on their sides on a cookie sheet.

  • Bake the columns in an oven at 200 degrees F for 10 minutes to harden them.
