How to Clean an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Reel

Save

Abu Garcia produces a range of spinning and baitcasting reels designed for both freshwater and saltwater angling. The baitcasting line of reels produced by the company includes the more modern low-profile design as well as the traditional round design still favored by many anglers. The Ambassadeur line of reels from Abu Garcia features the larger round design and is suitable for a range of game fish, including bass, catfish and some in-shore game fish species. Cleaning the Ambassadeur reel is necessary, as with any other type of reel.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Rag or towel
  • Water
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Reel oil
  • Remove old line from the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reel before cleaning. Press the spool release button located on the upper back of the reel. Pull old line from the spool. Cut the knot attaching the line to the spool with scissors.

  • Locate the small screws located on the side of the Ambassadeur reel opposite the handle. Turn the small screws to the left to loosen and remove. Pull the side of the reel straight off to access the spool.

  • Dip a clean rag or towel in water and wipe down the exterior of the reel to remove dirt and debris such as pond scum. Pay attention to crevices and around the handle of the Ambassadeur reel and drag adjustment where debris can accumulate.

  • Use a soft-bristle brush to help access crevices where dirt or debris can accumulate.

  • Wipe the spool of the reel with a damp rag and use the soft-bristle brush to remove stubborn deposits of dirt or debris. Also wipe the interior of the reel where the spool is designed to be mounted.

  • Dry the reel thoroughly and apply one or two drops of oil to the point inside the reel where the spool connects to the reel body. Assemble the spool back into the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reel body and secure the side access with the screws.

  • Remove the screw cover from the center of the reel handle and apply one or two drops of oil. Replace the cover in the center of the handle. Apply oil to the line guide located at the front of the reel for smooth operation.

  • Wipe down the reel and spool to apply a thin coat of oil to the surface that will help displace moisture and provide a protective barrier.
