As office design advances, buildings have become more and more complicated. Hallways are created to get the most rentable space out of each floor, but building placement may not make sense to visitors or clients.
There are many companies that design and create "people moving" maps. These systems often include a posted map in the hallways. Directions can include arrows, floor lines or other ways to direct visitors to specific areas of the building. But not every building owner is prepared for this expense. Creating a simple map can help your customers find your office.
Things You'll Need
- Grid paper
- Measuring tape
- Straight edge
- Copier (optional)
Choose a scale for the map. For a large building, each square on the grid may have to represent a yard or a meter. For smaller buildings, use a foot per square. This gives the map the greatest detail.
Measure the inside dimensions of the floor. If it is inconvenient to measure through another office, check with the building manager for accurate dimensions. Draw these lines on the grid paper to your scale. Use a straight edge to give your map clear, crisp lines.
Measure the parts of the building that are permanent. Many walls can be moved, or may be unique to a particular floor. But there are parts that are common and are in the same place on every floor, such as elevators and stairs. Draw these features onto the grid paper in their appropriate places.
Copy the partially drawn map. This saves a lot of time when drawing maps of a multi-floor building. It's also a good idea to make some extra copies in case mistakes are made.
Measure the interior office walls and doors and draw them onto the map. Repeat for each floor.
