How to Merge or Split Cells & Data in Microsoft Excel

Merging and splitting cells and data is done using the Merge and Center icon on the Home tab. This feature is useful when you need to center information across the top of your worksheet. Use this icon when you want to merge and split an existing merge. When you merge cells, Excel forms one large cell with information in the left cell. So if you are merging cells A1, B1 and C1, Excel will form one cell with data from cell A1.

  • Open Excel 2010. Type some random numbers in cells A1, B1 and C1. Highlight cells A1, B1 and C1.

  • Click the "Home" tab and select "Merge and Center." The cells will merge as one large cell displaying information from cell A1.

  • Split the merged cells by selecting the newly merged cell. Click "Merge and Center" icon. The cells will split displaying three separate cells again.
