Instructions

    • 1

Cut evergreen branches with a sharp pair of garden clippers or a sharp knife.

    • 2

Crush the stems with a hammer or other blunt object. This allows the stem to take up more water.

    • 3

Place the evergreen stems in lukewarm water. Warm water is absorbed quickly by plants.

    • 4

Place the evergreen branches in a bucket or pan of water the night before decorating. Completely cover the greenery and allow to set overnight. According to the Clemson University Cooperative Extension, this allows the evergreens to absorb the maximum amount of water.

    • 5

Remove from the water and allow the surface water to drip from the greenery.

    • 6

Spray the evergreens with a anti-transpirant, which seals in moisture.

    • 7

Arrange evergreens and display in a cool area out of direct sunlight. If possible, move displays to a cool location with temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit at night.
