1040A Child Tax Credit Instructions

The child tax credit reduces the amount of income tax that you owe on a dollar for dollar basis for each qualifying child that you claim on your tax return. To qualify for the credit, the child must be your dependent, under age 17 at the end of the year and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. You can use form 1040A to file your taxes and claim the tax credit.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the box in line 6, column 4 to indicate each of your children that qualify for the child tax credit.

    • 2

Complete the Child Tax Credit Worksheet on page 39 of the form 1040 instruction manual to find the value of your child tax credit. The credit equals $1,000 per child unless your income exceeds the annual limit, in which case the credit amount is decreased.

    • 3

Report the total value of your child tax credit on line 33 of your form 1040A tax return. This amount will be subtracted from your total tax liability.
