Property tax in Michigan is charged by the millage rate.

Property owners pay property tax that is based on the value of their property. Property taxed by the state of Michigan includes land and improvements to land such as a home, building or parking lot. The municipality in which the property lies assesses the monetary value of the property at regular intervals to find out the property's taxable value.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your home's assessed value. When your house was assessed, you should have received notification of the assessment from your city or town clerk's office.

    • 2

Find out what your city's millage rate is. The millage rate or mill rate is equal to 1/1000 of a dollar. So for every $1,000 of taxable value on a home or property, the owner of the home or property pays $1. Call your county or town clerk's office to find out your town's millage rate.

    • 3

Multiply the taxable or assessed value of your home by the millage rate. If, for example, your town's millage rate is 10 mills, you would divide 10 by 1,000 and then multiply the answer by your property's taxable value. So a home with a taxable value of $100,000 would have to pay $1,000 in property taxes.

Visit your local city clerk's office to find out if any back taxes are owed. If there is a past due balance, you will need to add this, plus any interest the town charges, to your tax bill.
