Waking computers remotely from a powered-down or "sleep" state is done by performing the Wake on LAN process. Wake on LAN sends a signal from a sending PC to the sleeping PC that causes the sleeping PC to boot. The signal is sent through a local network and is called a Magic Packet. Magic Packets are sent using a Magic Packet program commonly found online. The sleeping PC's physical or MAC address are needed to send the Magic Packet successfully.
Things You'll Need
- Remote PC
- Sending PC
- Local network
- Magic packet program
Power up the PC that will be booted remotely. During the boot, press "F11" to enter the PC's boot menu. In the boot menu, locate and enter the "Advanced Power Management" option. Locate "Power on by PCI Device," and enable the option. Exit the boot menu, and let the PC completely boot.
Press the "Start" icon on the remote PC, and open the "Command Prompt." Type "ipconfig/all" into the prompt, and hit "Enter." Move down to the "Physical Address" or "MAC Address" text, and write down the number to the right. This is the network address of the PC being awekened from sleep. Ensure that the remote PC is connected to a local network, and power off the machine.
Install a program able to send Magic Packets onto the PC sending the boot signal. Several freely available programs are included in the Resources.
Connect the sending PC to the local network. Run the Magic Packet program. Type the remote PC's physical or MAC address into the appropriately labeled field in the Magic Packet program. Press the "Send" or "OK" option to send the Magic Packet. The remote PC wakes from its "sleep" state.
