How to Manage Add-Ons in IE6

By default, version 6 of Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser does not allow you to manage browser add-ons using the program's existing menus. To make up for this oversight, an Add-on Manager tool is incorporated into Internet Explorer when you install either the Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 update package for the Windows XP operating system. Once you install one of these packages on your system, enabling, disabling or updating your Internet Explorer add-ons becomes a quick task.

Instructions

  1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or 3

    • 1

      Close all open programs.

    • 2

Click the Windows "Start" button, select "All Programs" and then click "Windows Update."

    • 3

      Click "Express (Recommended)."

    • 4

Click "Install Updates" and then follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation process. Depending on the speed of your computer and your Internet connection, this can take up to an hour.

    • 5

Click "Finish" once installation completes to restart your computer.

    Manage Internet Explorer 6 Add-ons

    • 6

Open an Internet Explorer browser window. Click "Tools" in the top menu bar and select "Manage Add-ons."

    • 7

Click the "Show" drop-down menu and select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" to view the complete list of add-ons present on your computer.

    • 8

Click the name of the add-on you want to work with.

    • 9

Select the "Enable" option to turn on the add-on or the "Disable" option to turn it off. If you only need to update the add-on to its most recent version, click the "Update ActiveX" button near the bottom-right corner of the window.

    • 10

Click "OK" to confirm your changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even if you do not see Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 in the list of options after clicking "Express (Recommended)," you still need to click "Install Updates." This allows Windows to install a prerequisite set of updates and then restart itself. Once this happens, repeat the preceding steps to be presented with Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 as an update choice.
