The iPhone's "Error 9" is a failure to recover, usually caused by a faulty installation of one of the programs on the phone. While this error is fairly common, the exact cause remains "unknown." Fortunately, there is a fairly standard solution for most cases and a solid backup if nothing else works. Fixing the error uses a backup version of the phone's programming, created any time the phone is synced with iTunes, restored or iTunes is updated.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest version of iTunes.

    • 2

Turn the iPhone off by holding down the "Sleep/Wake button" until the phone is completely shut down. Do not have the phone hooked up to the computer.

    • 3

      Launch iTunes.

    • 4

Hold the "Home" button down and connect the iPhone to the computer. Keep the button pressed until iTunes shows that the phone is in recovery mode. Release the button.

    • 5

Follow instructions as they appear on the screen. The procedure will use a previously created backup and should restore the phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the problem continues, try using a different USB port to connect the phone to the computer. If this doesn't work, take the iPhone to the nearest Apple Store and see what can be done. Worst-case scenario: you may be provided with a new iPhone.
