Deep condition after cleansing. Deep conditioning is an excellent treatment for split ends because most split ends are the result of excessively dry and damaged hair. Conditioning is especially effective after shampooing, when the hair comes into contact with chemical detergents that strip it of its moisture. Conditioning helps restore the moisture balance and softens brittle hair.

Allow your hair to dry out naturally. Harsh blow drying at high temperatures can really drain the hair shaft of its natural moisture, causing it to split further. You can control and prevent split ends by allowing your hair to dry out naturally, or blow drying at a low temperature. Also, don't hold the dryer too close to the hair.

Use hot oil massages. Another way to re-hydrate the hair shaft is to massage with warm oils like coconut, sesame and olive. These oils are not sticky and wash off easily, while keeping the hair moisturized. Hot oil massage can also get the blood circulating through the scalp, controlling the production of oil in the scalp, thereby keeping it moisturized.

Stop chemical treatments. Chemical treatments like straightening, perming and curling --- any treatment that requires the use of hot irons puts your hair at risk of drying and damage due to split ends. Stop all chemical treatments to prevent split ends from worsening.

5
Comb out gently only when absolutely dry. Proper combing of hair will ensure that the blood flow to the scalp is stimulated, keeping it moisturized and evenly distributing natural oils from the root to the tip. This prevents breakage due to split ends. However, avoid combing hair when it's wet, as hair with split ends is more prone to breakage.
