Front-loading washing machines work by tumbling the dirty clothes through a mixture of soap and water. These machines use less water than conventional top-loading washers and, because of their smaller sizes, are used in places such as apartments, where larger washers won't fit. After the clothes are washed, the dirty water is pumped out through a drain hose. Occasionally these hoses can become clogged with silt and debris. Unclogging a front-loading washer's drain hose is a fairly simple task.
Things You'll Need
- Garden hose
- Garden hose sprayer
Unplug the front-loading washer. Move the machine away from the wall and any obstructions behind it so you can reach the hose.
Detach the hose from the drain. It may be secured with a plastic tie or wire that needs to be cut first. Lift the gooseneck portion of the hose out of the drain.
Place a towel and bucket under the hose where it attaches to the machine. Detach the hose from the washer. These hoses are typically threaded into place much like a garden hose; turn counterclockwise to disconnect. Use pliers if the connection is too tight to remove by hand.
Take the clogged drain hose outside. Attach the spray nozzle to the end of the hose. Aim the sprayer into the clogged washer hose and spray a blast down the hose. Continue spraying until the hose is no longer clogged. For a stubborn clog, insert a of stick, such as a broom handle, into the hose and force the clog out of the hose.
Replace the hose onto the back of the washer. Turn the hose clockwise to secure.
Insert the gooseneck into the drain. Secure with a piece of wire or plastic tie.
Move the washer back to its original location. Plug the washer in.
