How to Know When the Bond in H2O Is Broken?

How to Know When the Bond in H2O Is Broken? thumbnail
H2O is the molecular name of water.

H2O is one of the most recognizable molecules in chemistry. In fact H2O is the chemical formula of water. Knowing when the H2O bond is broken is not easy for the untrained eye nor is it all that easy to perform.

Things You'll Need

  • Ceramic or glass bowl
  • Wall transformer

Instructions

    • 1

Use electrolysis to split water. Boiling or freezing water will not break H2O bonds.

    • 2

Pour water into a bowl, filling it half way. Use a glass or ceramic bowl, because stainless steel can conduct electricity.

    • 3

Take a 12 volt wall transformer. Cut off the connector and separate the two leads. One is positive and the other negative.

    • 4

Place each of the leads in the water without letting them touch each other. You will see bubbles around each end of the connector. The bubbles around the positive side are oxygen and the bubbles around the negative side are hydrogen.
