How to Change a Honda Odyssey Front Disc Brake Pad

Changing your own disc brake pads includes working with rotors and brake calipers.

The front disc brakes on the Honda Odyssey provide most of the stopping power needed to control the van. The brake pads are housed inside a metal part called a brake caliper. The brake caliper is mounted to the top of the brake rotor and a piston inside the caliper pushes the pads onto the rotor causing the van to stop. You will need a basic tool set because the nuts on the calipers will differ in size between models.

Things You'll Need

• Cross lug wrench
• Car jack
• 2 jack stands
• Ratchet set
• C clamp
• Replacement pads

Instructions

1. Loosen the five wheel nuts on each front wheel using the cross lug wrench. Raise each side of the front end off the ground one side at a time using the jack. Lower the front end onto jack stands. Remove the wheel nuts and pull the wheel off the frame.

2. Look behind the calipers and loosen the two nuts on the rear of the caliper using the ratchet set. Remove the calipers from the rotors by lifting up on them and pulling the calipers off the rotor.

3. Pull the two black brake pads out of the calipers using your hand. Place the C clamp over the caliper so that the push arm is on the rear of the caliper and the arm is on the piston. Turn the handle on the push arm until the piston is forced back into the caliper. Remove the C clamp the by reversing the actions you made to connect it.

4. Place the pads into the calipers. Place the calipers onto the rotor. Tighten the nuts on the rear of the caliper. Replace the wheels. Replace the wheel nuts. Raise the front end one side at a time and remove the jack stands and then lower the front end to the ground. Tighten the wheel nuts.
